Don't get low in Vitamin D

Low vitamin D levels increase mortality. Are you eating enough of the right vegetables.
Health
New research from the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital shows that low blood vitamin D levels increase mortality. The study included 96,000 Danes and was recently published in the distinguished British Medical Journal.
A study of 96,000 Danes adds yet more evidence suggesting a vitamin D deficiency can raise the risk for cancer and death.
“We have conducted a major Danish study, in which we have examined the connection between genes associated with permanent low levels of vitamin D and mortality. We can see that genes associated with low vitamin D levels involve an increased mortality rate of 30 percent and, more specifically, a 40 percent higher risk of cancer-related deaths.
“An important factor in our study is that we have established a causal relationship,” says Shoaib Afzal, a physician at Copenhagen University Hospital.
Vitamin D deficiency is generally associated with an increased risk of poor bone health. However, recent studies have shown that low levels of this important vitamin also involve an increased risk of other diseases and higher mortality rates. For the very first time, a brand new scientific study has established a causal relationship between low vitamin D levels and increased mortality. The researchers have not only established a statistical relationship as in previous studies.

96,000 Danes from large-scale population studies
"We have conducted a major Danish study, in which we have examined the connection between genes associated with permanent low levels of vitamin D and mortality. We can see that genes associated with low vitamin D levels involve an increased mortality rate of 30 per cent and, more specifically, a 40 per cent higher risk of cancer-related deaths. An important factor in our study is that we have established a causal relationship," says Shoaib Afzal, Medical Doctor at Herlev Hospital, Copenhagen University Hospital.
In the scientific study, which is based on the Copenhagen City Heart Study and the Copenhagen General Population Study, vitamin D levels were measured using blood samples from both studies, and specific genetic defects were examined. All participants were followed in the 100% complete Danish registers for mortality from 1976 until today.
"In previous studies, a close statistical relationship has been established between low vitamin D levels and increased mortality rates. However, the fact that vitamin D deficiency can be a marker for unhealthy lifestyles and poor health in general may have distorted the results. This led to our current study, which was based on an examination of the participants' genes – genes which cannot be explained by unhealthy lifestyles," says Børge Nordestgaard, Clinical Professor at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and Chief Physician at Copenhagen University Hospital.

Preventive treatment?
"Our study shows that low vitamin D levels do result in higher mortality rates, but the best way of increasing vitamin D levels in the population remains unclear. We still need to establish the amount of vitamin D to be added, as well as how and when it is most effective: Should we get vitamin D from the sun, through our diet or as vitamin supplements? And should it be added in the foetal stage via the mother, during childhood or when we have reached adulthood?" Børge Nordestgaard continues.
When the sun shines on our skin, the skin produces vitamin D. Evidence suggests that sunshine has a positive effect on our health, but sunburns must be avoided as they increase the risk of skin cancer. A diet rich in vitamin D or the intake of vitamin D supplements can also cover our need to some extent .A study of 96,000 Danes adds yet more evidence suggesting a vitamin D deficiency can raise the risk for cancer and death.

The researchers define 'a low level' of vitamin D as 'a level that is 20 nmol/L lower than normal'. In Denmark, a minimum level of 50 nmol per litre plasma is currently recommended.

TURKEY, TOUGH TIMES TRY CHCKEN!

"(Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day) (in North America) an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in October. Hmmm. There is no mention about the Native Americans here at all. LOL I am sure they could had say, "Thank you Native Americans for helping us learn how to grown food when we were dying the time we arrived to your land" JACINTO RIVERA
Actually they ate wild game...the turkey came much later.

Anyways I like what this G+ friend of mine said about Thanksgiving. People/readers forget I do blogs to help the poor and needy get through TOUGH TIMES. (That's the name of my blog, remember?)
My Mother, bless her heart, had a rough struggle though this earth life. She was mentally handicap (mentally challenged, haptic whatever,) to about a 9-12 year old level. She did develop before her death to about 16 yr old. Mom was perfect in her religion and her mom too never said a unkind about anything. They never stole; lied, whined, cried or bemoaned anything or any body. I never appreciated these characters until I left home and found everyone else had one or two.
My step-father could not read nor write. But, could fix anything; plumbing, electric work, build house, fix cars and appliances and, move houses. When times got tough we all pitched in went in the fields of Arizona and picked cotton or, in summers, into Oregon fields, orchards and picked fruit or vegetables. All he had was what he had in his pockets, he never gripped or deserted us four kids. During these times we lived in parks and out of the trunk of our car that had all of our passion's.
Holliday was sometimes sparse. When one can't read nor write is limits level of intelligence just as it did in mom.
One year I remember some organization giving Mom her first turkey. She thought it was a big chicken but found out differently when it would never get done. That meat was bloody tough. We couldn't figure out why people like it.
We never had one again. We're now all grown and some have and some are in "Tough Times," and two are single and alone on the holidays. I don't want turkey. Chicken sounds OK. Wish my family would just bring me a holiday plate. (No one to cook for) The holidays can be mean, but I remember my parents ways, no wimping, whining. Buy, if you can something special for yourself. If you don't treat yourself nice no one else will. Happy Holliday's my friend. Tough Times may require a small hen this year. It will all be over soon.

USE THE TOUGH TIME ORGANIC IF YOU CAN HEN
IF you want to help the poorer folks, look around outside your comfort zones.

Eat the chicken and with the extra money buy another family a good roaster.
It fed all 6 of us! Thank You!

Milk & Mortality:
I tend to do this style of diet:
During the first half of the show, physician and nutrition expert Dr. John McDougall commented on a British research study which found a diet rich in milk could have detrimental health consequences. The study found frequent milk consumption was not good for bones and doubled the risk of death, McDougall reported. People are being poisoned from fat and environmental contaminants in the food they eat and diary is at the root of it, he suggested. According to  McDougall, cow's milk is only to be consumed by calves as it causes early sexual maturation in humans as well as contributes to cancer and obesity. "It's just the wrong food for people," he said.

McDougall traced America's obesity epidemic on dietary changes which have seen an increase in consuming animal foods and oils over the last 34 years. He blamed China's increasing obese population on the country shifting from 90% rice-based diet to one filled with animal products. McDougall railed against olive oil consumption, noting it has no nutritional value and when consumed gets stored under the skin as fat. He warned about treating type 2 diabetes with medicine as a recent study found those who aggressively treated with medication were at increased risk for death, heart disease, and weight gain. McDougall recommended high calorie plants on the dinner plate.
