Wild Mullein, Native American Lung Remedy
This is one of my post from Native American sources. It's one of my older post done in Sherm's Organic News, which is on draft. The flower of the herb I've used in a oil for my children's ear infections. I used the herb Mullein for Lungs. I've taken friends on herbal walks to showing them this herb. Never in the wild collect by the roads. Mother earth is everybody's garden leave what you can for next year. (roots)If you take from Mother Nature, give something back.MULLEIN PLANT (Plentiful common wild flower, weed, wild eatable plant used for alternative medicine for centuries. It peaks in middle of summer with a cone of yellow flowers then seeds; Verbascum thapsus or nigrum variety) Also called; Adam's Flannel, Hags's Taper, Jupiter's Staff, Molene, Velvet Dock, Woolly Mulin.
Properties;Great Mullein has been used for centuries in many countries throughout the world. The value of this Great Mullein as a proven medicinal herb is now backed by scientific evidence. Some valuable constituents contained in Mullein are Coumarin and Hesperidin, they exhibit many healing abilities. Research indicates some of the uses as analgesic, antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, antiviral, bactericide, cardio-depressant, estrogenic, fungicide, hypnotic, sedative and pesticide are valid.

The leaves, root, and the flowers are anodyne, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, nervine, and vulnerary. It said to be use with Elecampane, Yerba Santa, Marsh mellow, cherry bark i.e. The plant posses slightly sedative and narcotic properties. (the narcotic properties helps with the pain.
(Seeds are too strong for novice uses. Externally the leaves is applied to sunburn, ulcers, tumors and piles. All plants are anti fungal...collected in the wild is organic.
Please don't pick more than is needed.
Golden seal an antibiotic and a example of an herb that has been "over picked" whose seeds were not planted back where picked, and now are not available in the wild and controlled by the herbal company's which we pay too much their abuse. The blame belongs to mostly the herbal industry. Their should be laws that they need to replant famish areas they've over picked...especially, in famine situations in parts of the world.
I present this post in my blog because it's one of the "famine herbal," available for the needy please learn how to use them (Plantain, Nettle, Chicory, Dandelion, i.e.) Don't gather any plant by roads, it will have lead in the plant, nor near by fields where they've sprayed with pesticides or by ditch banks where the state kills off weeds.

Mullein use to be used for Indian diaper,( and smoking) so, I've heard and has been called Grandmother flannel" because of its soft thick fuzzy-furry leaves. The yellow flower has been used as a dye.
Recipes
Tea: An aromatic tea can be made by boiling 1 tbs. dried leaves or root, in 1 cup water for 5 - 10 min. A sweeter tea can be made by infusing the fresh or dried flowers. Or for children and the elderly use milk instead of water. Sweeten with honey, if desired. Honey can be an anti biotic depending on the plants the bees use. (Manak is a strong anti biotic honey.) (Andrographis plant is another natural antibiotic (kills parasites) too.)Roots can be boiled, leaves and flowers an infusion-decoctions teas are best.
Mullein oil: Use flowers or root. Place in blender or crush (herb pestle, if dried use coffee grinder), fill jar, then cover with olive oil, set in warm place for 2 weeks. Strain before use.

TINCTURING, THE FOLK METHOD
The Folk Method
is the easiest to obtain is probably a commercial 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) or 100 proof (50% by volume). When using dried herb 80 proof vodka is enough while making a tincture from fresh plants using a 100 proof or stronger is probably better due to the juices of the herbs.
(For shorter storage time: you can use ACV)
Use this folk method when making Lobelia. You pay too much for it at HFS and I feel it's too weak. This herb is the best poison remover made.
The Folk Method
The easiest menstrum to obtain is probably a commercial 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) or 100 proof (50% by vol
Tincturing dry herbs:
1. Add combined powdered herb into a large jar with a lid.
2. Add enough menstrum to wet the herb so that about ¼ inch of extra menstrum sits atop the herb. If the herb is floating then it would be ¼ inch below the herb.
3. Clean off the rim of the jar if needed. Seal the jar tightly with the lid.
4. Check the jar after 12 hours. If the herb has absorbed the menstrum add more so that it is ¼ inch of extra liquid.
5. Shake frequently for 14 days. Let it sit for an extra day.
6. Pour off liquid from the top. Press the remaining wet pulp by scooping out a small amount of the wet pulp into muslin cloth and wringing out the liquid into a large bowl. Discard dry herb and continue to wringing out the remainder of the pulp in small batches from the muslin cloth into the bowl.
7. Filter the liquid again with a muslin cloth or coffee filter.
8. Bottle the liquid in containers. Keep lids tight.

FOLK METHOD to MAKING TINCTURES
How to make up tinctures? It just as easy as any cooking with any recipe. You starting with a solvent and an herb plant. This is far more economical than tinctures from the HFS watered down versions to this recipe, which is only colored herbal water. I buy in bulk and skip the health food stores high prices and this recipe will make the tincture (herb) stronger. Whenever available use organic grown herbs (grown with no chemicals or sprays) which has most of the medical properties still in the herb.** http://thenerdyfarmwife.com/my-favorite-cold-flu-tincture/
The root is the most powerful but you don't need roots all the time. Next is the flower, and stem which is mostly fiber. To make up balms or salves, which is another way of getting herbs into the body through the skin. Just use the links below. (u-Tube) This link will show and teach how to make up these salves. And, their are many different cooks recipes and styles.
Know your herbs and solvents by doing some home work with research that' easily done on the Internet..." after you get past the "buy me ads." Look at the address of the link it will give you clues. I spend a lot of time researching so, I've learned how to avoid and spend my time more productively.
Then, put them on "book mark" or, "favorites" in a special folder that will weed out the annoying ads next time when searching.
By doing some research you will find out what herbs interfere with your medicines etc. such as Lobelia, Goats Rue, Golden Seal Root etc., or, interact with drugs, because they also can take the place of the drug...causing an overdose of the medicine.
THIS TINCTURE METHOD IS CALLED THE "FOLK METHOD" and, is strong and simple to remember and carry out. HOWEVER; THEY'RE MANY RECIPES. (1/4 liquid to 3/4 herb has to be real strong?)
1/2 part cut herb (goat rue i.e.) or any herb needed
1/2 part Vodka or organic apple cider vinegar or vegetable glycerine
Stir in your jar; cap, label and date; let it sit for 6 weeks; shake occasionally; strain in cheese cloth; ringing and squeezing the tincture out. Bottle: it makes 1/2 the amount you started with. Keep out of direct light; store in dark bottles.

Making Cough Syrup & Health Issues
Tincture of Garlic or Onion Tincture of Garlic or Onion (good basic syrup recipe for coughs, asthma etc.) colds and flues. It is natural sulfa like the sulfa drugs and works in the same way. I wouldn’t believe this worked except I was coughing my head off one day and happen to be in the health food store and asked the clerk for a cough remedy. She referred me to the one in the fridge that was this one. When I got home I looked it up in my book because the herbalist in the area was one of my teachers. Sure enough I had the formula. The local company no longer makes it up. They were a much better company when they were small. The owner is now deceased. So for those who want this basic tincture it’s yours for the making. How ever this is under a copyright and cannot be published. Thank you for not stealing. I enjoy helping others but not at my expense. Tincture of Garlic or Onion Syrup of; Garlic or Onion 1 lb. of minced or chopped garlic cloves Equal parts apple cider vinegar and distilled water sufficient to cover the garlic (*Or/and Onion which is weaker but great for children) Get a garlic press they are great. 1 pt. of Glycerin, if stored longer. Added this at the very end. You may stick a cinnamon (cloves) stick in at this time and then store it. (Also, you can use grain alcohol and/or vinegar is used in making of tinctures) I don't store mine a long time so I just use Bragg's Apple cider Vinegar. (You can add lemon juice, ginger, cinnamon, clove and parsley to help with the odor if too offensive.) Add the parsley before adding the honey etc., then, throw it away or chop some of it in the concoction after straining in Tupperware plastic strainer. Their holes are smaller. Strain again through good quality paper towels. This is very slow, but effective. 3 lbs pure honey Place the garlic into a wide mouth jar, cover with the vinegar and water; close, shake well together; allow to stand in a cool place for 4 days, macerating (shaking thoroughly) 1-2 times daily; add the glycerin, shake and allow to stand another day; strain with pressure and filter through muslin or thin linen cloth; add the honey and stir until thoroughly mixed; Seal the jar tightly and keep in a cool place. http://shermsorganicnews.blogspot.com/2009/12/h1n1-or-mad-cow-disease.html: Suggested dosage:1 tsp. – 1 Tbs. 3-4 times daily between meals (minced garlic or pressed get out the properties best.Uses: Asthma, bronchitis, catarrh conditions, phthisis, tuberculosis, coughs, dyspnea, heart weakness, internal ulceration and so much more but this gives you the idea. Look up properties of Garlic. (Their are ways to take the garlic pungent odor out. Work with the vinegar first with caraway, cloves, fennel seeds, cinnamon stick is storage container, macerate, strain, then add the glycerin.) I do not mind the taste with out all the extra herbs. My style is to add a carrier herb (catalyst), like lobelia tincture, a very intelligent herb, which knows what to do and assist other herbs where to go. The lobelia tincture or use strained ginger root (also a catalyst), too, (and so is cayenne). These are all optional. Catalyst herbs move herbs quickly through the body and good carriers of other herbs. A good herbal formula has a catalyst in its composition. Memorize these three and use one in formulas. *You can do this with stronger onion (especially for the children) as well as garlic. It's doesn’t seem as strong but don't under estimate it, I’ve used this myself a lot. I only like fresh garlic in season or onion and sometimes-fresh garlic isn’t available. http://thenerdyfarmwife.com/my-favorite-cold-flu-tincture/
